Where did the word Marihuana come from?

Origin of the term Marihuana

The word Marihuana is a Spanish spelling of the word that in English (at least today) is more commonly spelled as marijuana. See our listing for history of word Marijuana for history of both terms - they can be used interchangeably - the marihuana spelling was in vogue as cannabis Prohibition was being enacted in the 1930s, so for a period of time this spelling made it into relatively frequent usage, being included in the language of multiple pieces of legislation. The marihuana spelling (in English) is falling out of favor vs. marijuana, with the more appropriate (and increasingly-used) term being cannabis.
